It took me a few seconds to draw it, but it took me 34 years to learn how to draw it in a few seconds.

You never can do what the kids do. What you do is look at yourself and find your own way to address the fact that the times have changed and that you have to pay attention. You can’t be a designer and say, “Oh, this is timeless.” Nothing is timeless!

If you think something is really irritating or the end of all design as we know it, pay attention, because it’s probably good.

To move forward and not become reactionary, you have to take risks. Otherwise you will stand still. Not to do it is much more of a risk than doing it, because you risk everything by not developing and growing.

Most businesses that create any form of product make a huge investment in R&D, but graphic designers can’t because they’re always fulfilling some kind of contract. They really need to set aside the time to make a big sloppy failure.a desirable ingredient.

The job of the designer is to make things understandable, usable, accessible, enjoyable… important to a public, that involves the public.

My work is play. And I play when I design. I even looked it up in the dictionary, to make sure that I actually do that, and the definition of “play,” number one, was “engaging in a childlike activity or endeavor,” and number two was “gambling.” And I realize I do both when I’m designing.

Having no purpose is the function of art, so somebody else can look at it and ask a question. Design is different – you’re supposed to understand what’s going on. You can be delighted by it, intrigued by it, but you’re supposed to know it’s a hot dog stand.

Photography is about finding things. And painting is different – it’s about making something.

There are the things that are out in the open, and there are the things that are hidden. The real world has more to do with what is hidden.

I believe that there is something in you that strives for order, and within that order, there’s a certain kind of mishmoshy confusion, and you bring this mishmoshy confusion, if you succeed, into some kind of order. There’s an element of control, and there’s also an element that just happens—if you’re very lucky. Artists need luck.

A window covered with raindrops interests me more than a photograph of a famous person.

I’m sometimes mystified by people who keep diaries. I never thought of my existence as being that important.

I like the Zen artists: they’d do some work, and then they’d stop for a while.

What makes anyone think that I’m any good?
